How Basebox solves the backend problem of innovation

The development of innovation is often hampered by data management challenges. Time, cost, compliance, complexity and regulatory issues make it difficult for teams to build a secure, powerful backend. This was also the motivation behind the founding of Basebox, an out-of-the-box data management system that significantly reduces development time and costs. In the interview with founder René Herzer, we learn more about Basebox, its customers and future prospects.

How would you explain your solution in three sentences to a professional colleague from the health sector?

basebox is a secure, compliant data management system ready to use. It contains all essential backend components for Software developers. Developers can setup their compliant complete infrastructure within an afternoon and focus on frontend development. basebox is compliant to medical device regulations. All documents required in audits as part of the certification are fully available for download. It has a unique GraphQL to SQL compiler. Meaning: Developers don't need to write SQL anymore.

What problem motivated you to start the company?

We spent 4 years working with physicians and scientists of Charité Berlin developing Health Tech innovations. During this time, we noticed that even the best ideas had a hard time to make it to market. What was the problem? Data management, the essential function of the backend of their innovation, was underestimated by almost everyone regarding: Time, costs, compliance,complexity, regulation, cybersecurity. Each team developed new solutions to the same data management challenges and invented yet another more or less usable backend. A secure, compliant and performant backend costs as much as € 300 - 500.000. It consumes development time of 6-12 months. These resources can be better invested.

How do you convince a pharmaceutical company, a health insurance company or another potential client to set up a pilot project with you?

First of all: we are easy to use. In a few hours basebox is installed.
We start in the medical sector because it is the area that is most sensitive and that is where we come from. To make it easy for teams to go through the certification processes, all documents for their audit are ready and available for download. This saves the teams costs and a lot of time. After all, scientists in the medical field often have conflicting requirements: Deliver on time, stay in budget, deliver quality. A compliant, secure data management backend development is the biggest risk factor in meeting all these requirements. With basebox, you can save thousands of hours of professional development time while meeting regulatory needs. basebox protects against cyber attacks, an omnipresent danger that we can prevent. So you can also sleep better. The first 10 users of your solution are free - also so that you can test for a long time, because that is also important for research teams. Sometimes it is also the case that digital solutions are to be built for a very small group of patients - for a rare disease, for example. Such solutions can only be built if the development costs are low. Only when you are on the market and already making relevant sales do you spend money on the back end. Our idea is that the cost of a professional, secure, compliant data management system is always and in principle more affordable than building it yourself. Our pricing is simple and there are no hidden costs.

Who are your current customer (groups) and who do you want your potential customers to be?

Our first customers are from Health Tech. Our potential customers are from the sectors Gov Tech, Defense, Space, Industry, Utilities, Mobility.
basebox can be used worldwide for all areas in which secure and compliant data management matters.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years and how can 5-HT support you?

basebox serves as the basis for many secure, regulatory-compliant and fast applications. Innovation development should be faster and easier. In this way, we make a valuable contribution to digitalisation. We believe in preserving prosperity and democracy when we are all protected from cybercrime. We would like to contribute to this.
