medicalmotion: Personalized Therapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions with AI
Corinna Herrmann
What happens when lived patient experience meets artificial intelligence and real-world healthcare delivery?
In our interview with Thomas Schlampp, Managed Care expert at medicalmotion, we explore an AI-powered care platform designed to address neuromusculoskeletal disorders in a truly personalized and holistic way – far beyond conventional back or knee apps.
In May 2025, medicalmotion participated in the 5-HT X-linker “Innovation in occupational health management”, where they presented their solution and sparked valuable discussions on how digital innovation can sustainably improve occupational health and care pathways.
How would you explain your solution to a healthcare professional in three sentences?
medicalmotion is an AI-supported care platform for people with neuromusculoskeletal disorders. Based on individual information, it creates dynamically tailored exercise recommendations involving movement, strengthening, mindfulness, and education. Unlike traditional back or knee apps, medicalmotion takes into account the patient's actual situation, including multiple pain regions and comorbidities, thus enabling personalized care.

What problem motivated you to found medicalmotion?
The two founders of medicalmotion were themselves affected by illness and experienced the limitations of the healthcare system firsthand. Inspired by patient journeys, in which long examination and treatment processes often lead to surgery with questionable benefits, a vision emerged: a holistic, AI-supported therapy approach that bridges waiting times, prevents chronic conditions, and addresses the causes in a sustainable manner.
How do you convince pharmaceutical companies, health insurance companies, insurers or other potential customers to set up a pilot project with you?
medicalmotion addresses a key healthcare problem: insured individuals rarely suffer from isolated complaints, but often from multiple pain areas and comorbidities. Traditional back or knee apps do not reflect this reality. Our approach enables the simultaneous recording and treatment of individual or multiple pain areas and changes over time, thus providing a realistic picture of the patient's situation. Through the close integration of personalized technology and physiotherapeutic support, we reach patient groups that are often not adequately cared for with standard solutions.
For health insurance companies, this means fewer gaps in care, better therapy adherence, and the potential to reduce follow-up costs. medicalmotion can be easily integrated into existing care pathways and addresses acute, subacute, and chronic conditions.
A pilot project with medicalmotion allows these advantages to be tested risk-free—based on real care data, with scientifically measurable results and the goal of ensuring modern, economically viable care for insured individuals.
Who are your current customers (groups) and who are the potential customers?
Our current customers are statutory and private health insurance companies in Germany and Switzerland. These partnerships—currently more than 40—give insured persons access to medicalmotion. This has already enabled us to support over 20,000 users. The focus is on providing broad care for people with neuromusculoskeletal complaints. In the future, we want to expand our activities to other European markets in order to close gaps in care there as well and provide insurers with modern, economically viable care solutions.
Where do you see yourselves in 3 years' time and how can 5-HT support you?
In three years, we see medicalmotion as the leading AI-supported platform for neuromusculoskeletal disorders in Germany – with established partnerships with insurance companies and initial expansion into European markets. 5-HT can support us in tapping into relevant partners and markets and further scaling our vision through targeted networking and innovation support.
You took part in 5-HT X-linker "Innovation in occupational health" in May 2025. What is your impression of the event and what have you gained from participating (so far)?
Participating in the 5-HT X-Linker “Innovation in Occupational Health” was extremely valuable for us. The open atmosphere, practical presentations, and cross-industry exchange provided important impetus for future collaborations. The direct dialogue with decision-makers was particularly exciting, as it highlighted concrete starting points for innovative occupational health management approaches. For medicalmotion, it was an event with real added value, both in terms of content and strategy, especially for establishing new partner contacts.
