FLUICS - sustainable sample tracking for research labs
Have you ever heard of FLUICS? - FLUICS is a new word that unites two components that are present in every life sciences research lab: FLUIDS and MECHANICS. More importantly FLUICS is one of our network startups which participated in the 5-HT X-Linker: Lab of the future earlier this year. The young startup is building innovative labeling and inventory tracking solutions for life sciences, chemistry and analytical laboratories. Read our interview with founder and CEO Claudio Rolli to find out how FLUICS supports researchers on their quest for new discoveries.
How would you explain your solution in three sentences to a professional colleague in a chemical company?
FLUICS is providing intuitive and flexible solutions to label and locate all samples, reagents and instruments in research laboratories. Our labels are designed for chemistry labs and comply with safety regulations (GHS/CLP).
What problem motivated you to start the company?
As researchers we were highly frustrated when searching for - mostly poorly hand-labeled - samples in the lab. We are convinced that highly skilled people should not waste their time and energy to search for samples and reagents. It is more important to focus on the experiments that need to be done. That's why we developed our intuitive label printing solutions accessible to everyone in the lab from a PC or mobile device. We started with our flexible online inventory solution FLUICS CONNECT and recently expanded our portfolio with RAPID LABEL to print individual labels with hazard pictograms as required by lab safety regulations.
How do you convince a chemical company to set up a pilot project with you?
Getting started with our intuitive applications is simple and straightforward. You can test our RAPID LABEL Workspace or register a free FLUICS CONNECT inventory Workspace. We also have an extensive list of video tutorials that help to get familiar with the app's features. In addition, we consult laboratories on how to best solve their inventory tracking or labeling challenges. Typically, it takes not more than a week to install our system and implement it in the lab’s work routines.
Who are your current customer (groups) and who do you want your potential customers to be?
With our flexible and easy to implement solutions we aim at R&D laboratories where labeling samples by hand and using spreadsheets is still the - often error-prone - practice to manage the inventory.
What were your expectations of the 5-HT X-linker "Lab of the Future" and how would you rate the event overall?
We applied for the 5-HT X-linker "Lab of the Future" event because we are constantly looking for strategic partners with a relation to chemical or life sciences laboratories and this is exactly what the event offered. In addition, meeting other exciting startups in the field is a plus. We were very much satisfied with the outcome of the whole event, including the preparation, organization and the meetings we had during the event and in the follow-up.
Where do you see yourself in 3 years and how can 5-HT support you?
Over the last years we have become recognized experts in inventory tracking solutions and developed innovative label printing and scanning solutions. We are constantly keeping our ears and eyes open to understand the problems of daily lab work and we work hard to develop solutions and improve our applications to finally increase efficiency and safety measures in R&D laboratories. We see 5-HT as a strong and competent partner to build up new collaborations and find strategic partnerships for scaling our business.
